‘09 recession in retrospect - industrial decline

Industrial production over the course of last year fell by 11 percent.

The level of industrial production in Russia went down by 10.8 percent, according to the State Statistics Service. For the last month of the year, output increased by 2.7 percent on year-on-year basis. Compared to figures for November 2009, production in December grew by 5 percent.

During 2009, the production of mineral resources went down by 1.2 percent. Processing industries witnessed a 16 percent decline. The production and distribution of electricity, water, and gas for commercial and consumer uses dropped by 4.9 percent. 

The production of oil and gas condensate in the country increased by 1.2 percent to 494 million tons. The production of gas went down by 12.1 percent, leveling off at 584 billion cubic meters. The production of coal decreased by 9.2 percent to 298 million tons. While the mining of iron ore decreased 8.1 percent to 92 million tons, gold production increased by 5.4 percent. 

The generation of electricity in the country decreased 4.6 percent. 993 billion kilowatt-hours of power was generated in Russia.

Heating decreased by 1.4 percent to 1 341 million gigacal.

Russia’s car production decreased by 59.4 percent in 2009. The number of cars produced in the country went down to 597 000 vehicles. Truck production went down to 91 400 vehicles, evidencing a decline of 64.3 percent. The production of buses went down by 46.6 percent to 35 500 vehicles.

In the food sector, the production of bread decreased by 3.9 percent to 7.2 million tons. Meat production stood at 3.3 million tons, 14 percent lower than in 2009. Milk production increased by 1.5 percent to 10.5 million tons. The production of vodka and liquors decreased by 7.3 percent to 113 million dekalitres, beer production went down by 4.8 percent to 1.1 billion dekalitres.
